World Geography Intro Blog

The map we created for the Orientation Lab

My name is Trey Huneycutt and this is my first blog for the World Regional Geography class.  This was my first time using ArcGIS.  For our Orientation Lab we worked on some of the basic GIS functions and applied three different overlays: Box Turtle observations in Bay County, Panama City Crawfish Range, the PC Crawfish Critical habitat.

The Box Turtle overlay is pretty straight forward.  It shows the location and information for turtle sightings across the city and beach. The crawfish habitat overlay shows the range of the species throughout Panama City, Lynn Haven, and Bayou George. The range of the PC Crawfish is what you would expect: low lying wetlands, creeks, bayous, and ponds.  The Critical Habitat shows how development in Bay County has pushed the species to the more rural areas from Calloway to Bayou George.  If the rate of development in the county continues to increase, and this critical area becomes more developed, the risk of the species becoming critically endangered or extinct increases substantially.
